Kronau Skip Amber Holland

Both Saskatchewan rinks opened with wins at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women's Curling Championships in Red Deer.

Kronau's Amber Holland and Team Canada began their title defense with a 7-4 win over Heather Strong of Newfoundland and Labrador, while Regina's Michelle Englot stole points in the final two ends as Team Saskatchewan beat Heather Smith-Dacey and Nova Scotia 7-5.

The wins put Canada and Saskatchewan in a tie for first with Manitoba, British Columbia, and Ontario, who all have one win each after day one of the tournament.

Englot faces Newfoundland this morning and Kelly Scott's BC rink this afternoon, while Holland will take on Rebecca Atkinson and New Brunswick this afternoon and Alberta's Heather Nedohin foursome tonight.
