Swift Current residents are being encouraged to work together on creating safe workplaces and communities.

That's this year's theme for National Occupational Safety and Health Week. By encouraging safe working practices, the idea is to see safer communities to live in.

Jennifer Diguer, the occupational health and safety coordinator for the City of Swift Current, strongly encourages co-workers to come together to discuss safety and health in their workplaces.

"As someone who grew up in a small community where neighbours look out for each other, this is especially impactful for me," said Diguer.

While it is every company's responsibility and obligation to provide a safe working environment, it is also the duty of the employee to ensure they are doing their best to remain safe and healthy while working.

This is something the City of Swift Current stands by and pushes the surrounding community to emulate.

"The employees of the City invest in safety every day through training, job hazard assessment and safe work practices," said Diguer. "We carry these lessons to our homes, our neighbourhoods and the community organizations we work with."

This week is an especially opportune time to speak with younger members of an organization on the importance of health and safety. Those with greater experience can pass along their wisdom to those just beginning to navigate their career, helping to ensure safe and healthy practices that can provide a great start to years of habits.

National Occupational Safety and Health Week begins today, and finishes on May 12.
