Seniors in Shaunavon will have the chance to come together soon, with Wellness Day kicking off some interesting presentations and activities.

Age Friendly Shaunavon will be hosting its second Wellness Day for seniors on Thursday, May 16 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The full morning is free of charge due to sponsorship and will feature four presentations. Planting an herb garden, fall prevention, social prescriptions, and the yellow sleeve program promise to provide an entertaining and informative day.

Kim Anderson, a senior resource coordinator for Age Friendly Shaunavon has had a hand organizing the event, along with many others since the group’s conception in 2022.

“I've watched this program evolve from stages of planning and focus groups and it really makes me proud now,” expressed Anderson. “I am a senior now and I recognize that there are many people that don't go out and about simply because they don't have the means or they aren't invited. So with Age Friendly, I think the goal is to make our community inviting for all ages, especially our seniors.”

Much of this event has been funded by government grants. These include the Saskatchewan Seniors' mechanism Facilitating Independence Grant and Community Initiatives Grant through the government of Saskatchewan, along with the New Horizon Seniors Grant from the Government of Canada.

“It's a great way for seniors to get together and socialize, but it's also informative,” Anderson explained. “It's information that can help them to stay in their homes longer, to live healthy, safe lives and have some companionship as well that day. Our goal is to help with some education and some socializing and just having fun too.”

Deadline for registration is Monday, May 13th, which can be done by calling 306-294-7653. The group asks that participants pre-register as they will be providing lunch and a free Wellness pack. The event will be hosted at 199 3rd Ave West with doors opening at 9:00 AM.
