Being part of a service club has been part of the fabric of Swift current for many years.
Club's like the Kinsmen, K40, Kinettes, Kiwanis, Elks, Moose Lodge, Royal Purple and much more. Over time these clubs have seen their membership drop as older members retire or pass on and younger citizens seem to be doing other things and not joining a service club.
Last month the Prairie Pioneer Kiwanis Club handed the gavel back to the Swift Current Kiwanis Club President Travis Cuthbert, as they rolled their charter back into the Swift Current Club. The Prarie Pioneer Club started 39 years ago by splitting the Charter of the Swift Current Kiwanis Club as the membership was big enough to have 2 clubs. Since then the club has seen a decline in membership. Cuthbert said, "I think memberships are slipping across Canada, just generally speaking about Kiwanis." The Swift Current club is holding steady with membership but other clubs are seeing a loss of members.

Economically the loss of a service club hurts city residents as a whole. The Elks Lodge No. 8 announced to the City of Swift Current on Sept 26, 2016, that they will be closing their doors. The Elks have made an annual donation to allow the public to have free swimming and skating for over 39 years. This is the last year that will happen. If no other service clubs step in to fill the void then citizens will not be able to take advantage of this luxury. Those with special needs will not have this group to assist them.
