An increasing number of complaints regarding fraudulent phone calls from individuals claiming to be part of the Canada Revenue Agency have been reported to the Swift Current RCMP.

According to a release from the city detachment, the caller claims to be from the agency stating that taxes are owed. Threatening or aggressive language is then used as a frightening tactic. It has also been reported that in some cases the caller threatened criminal charges, jail time, or deportation if the payment was not made.

If anyone has lost money or given out personal information during one of these scams, they are encouraged to contact the local RCMP detachment, however, if anyone has received a call but recognized it as a scam, without giving out information, there is no need to contact RCMP.

Instead, they are encouraged to contact the Phone Busters Fraud Line at 1-888-495-8501, or the Canada Revenue Agency can also be contacted to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
