Tyler Steenbergen scored 59 seconds into overtime as the Swift Current Broncos came from down 4-2 in the third to beat Prince George 5-4.

“(Artyom Minulin) made a nice pass down low to me and I just kind of battled it out,” Steenbergen said. “I just kind of used my speed to cut to the net and luckily it went in.”

It was Steenbergen's second of the night on a good battle around the net to secure an impressive road with for the Broncos. Swift Current now has four straight wins and points in each of their last seven games.

“It's awesome,” Steenbergen said. “Beating the number two team in the (CHL rankings) feels great... our confidence right now is really good but we've got to keep level headed.”

The game was a battle of first place teams with Swift Current tied on top of the Eastern Conference and Prince George first in the West. Matching up and besting a strong team like the Cougars is a great boost for a surging Broncos group.

“It was a good measuring stick for us,” said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. “This was a game that was going to show us where we were as far as depth and how we are going to be able to play on a nightly basis. That's a good hockey team. They're one of the top teams in the country right now. They're big, fast and strong so for our guys to go out there match them and sometimes overwhelm them with speed I was very impressed with our guys.”

Swift Current started the game with a bad break as Shane Collins had his shot bounce of the back boards, off the back of Broncos goaltender Taz Burman and in for an early Prince George lead.

The Broncos responded on Steenbergen's first goal of a game; a nice one-timer off a pass by Colby Sissons. Steenbergen is now up to nine goals in eleven games this season and among the league leaders.

“It's awesome scoring goals and it's even better getting the wins when I'm scoring,” he said. “Our team has been playing great and I'm playing with some great players that are getting me the puck right now. It doesn't get any better than this.”

A key to the 18-year-old's success has been his work ethic in practice.

“Steener has always been a gifted player,” Heward said. “After practice you can get him to work on stuff that is going to make him a better player. He has really worked on being in the middle on the power play and getting pucks off difficult situations and working with his hands so he can get a quick release. He has really taken it to the next level and I'm happy for him.”

Swift Current pulled ahead in the second period on Gawdin's seventh of the season. The Cougars struck back immediately on a Tate Olson power play goal and then took a 3-2 lead when Jesse Gabrielle wired a shot by Burman for his sixth of the season.

An early too many men penalty in the third gave the Cougars the chance to add insurance and things looked bleak.

“I know we were down 4-2 but as a coaching staff we never really felt it was anything they were doing as much as we were doing to ourselves,” Heward said. “We were making decisions at the wrong time... there was a lot of tightening to do but it wasn't anything that couldn't be corrected. We knew if we tightened things up in certain areas we would be fine and it turned out well for us.”

The Broncos bounced back with two goals in fifty three seconds mid-way through the third period. Lane Pederson hammered home his third of the season on the power play and then Calvin Spencer one-timed a Gawdin feed by Ty Edmonds to draw Swift Current even.

They were buzzing again on the man advantage scoring on both chances they had. The Broncos have five power play goals in six opportunities on their road swing so far.

“The power play is always streaky,” Heward said. “I think we got a little away from our game plan before we got out on the trip as far as trying to be too cute and not taking the shots when we had the opportunity... us establishing a shot mentality, going to get rebounds and putting pressure on teams when they get tired has been a really big benefit for us.”

The win brings the Broncos to 8-2-0-1 on the season and 5-0-0-1 on the road.

“I think we're just in it a lot more,” Steenbergen said. “We're thinking positive. We're not worried about losing we're just going and doing our job.”

Steenbergen, Gawdin, Minulin, Sissons and Heponiemi all had two point nights for Swift Current. Burman made 34 saves to earn his fourth straight win.

There's no time for Swift Current to enjoy their victory as they're on the road to Kamloops tomorrow to face the Blazers. Listen live on The Eagle 94.1 FM to Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 7:30pm.
