The early returns on Ryan Graham as a Swift Current Bronco are overwhelmingly positive.

Graham scored twice more tonight including the game winner as the Broncos beat the Raiders 3-1 in Prince Albert.

He has now scored three times and added three assists in his two games since the Blades traded the veteran forward to Swift Current.

“The goals are nice,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “First one he creates with his speed... second one a big body around the net on the power play. I like his intensity he seems to be going after a lot of loose pucks winning a lot of battles. He's just added a little bit more of that veteran speed element to our game.”

Swift Current got off to a bit of a slow start on the night and were outshot 12-0 midway through the first period. They steadily got better as the game went on.

“We're happy with the win,” Smith said. “There were really good parts of the game and there were parts that were a little off. You could tell we were tired from last night and the travel... keeping it close in the first period was important and we found our legs in the second.”

Taz Burman was key in the early going as the veteran netminder made 17 saves in the first period to keep his team in it despite the hot start from the Raiders.

“Both goalies were real good that's why there weren't a lot of goals,” Smith said. “There were chances at both ends and both goalies were stellar. (Taz Burman) was real good tonight. Early and often they were around the net and they had some really good looks on their first power play of the game. Tonight Taz was really strong when we needed him the most... at the start of the game.”

Graham struck first for Swift Current 37 second into the second period when he cut out and fired a puck upstairs over goaltender Nicholas Sanders from the right face off circle. Swift Current couldn't build off that goal right away as they started to get in penalty trouble.

The Broncos did manage to kill off a full two minute five on three Prince Albert power play. Minutes later with Swift Current shorthanded again former Broncos forward Cavin Leth tied the game with a nice shot through traffic for his 5th of the season.

Despite the Leth goal the Broncos had a good night on their PK holding the Raiders to only 1 for 7.

“I thought we were really disciplined on the penalty kill,” Smith said. “We had a game plan on the 5 on 3 to keep our D tight to our goalie and have the forward move across the top. Sacrifice is a choice at that point... I thought the guys who were out there killing tonight sacrificed. They blocked shots and put the extra effort in. I thought that was a big part of our game tonight.”

The Broncos pulled ahead midway through the third period on a shift where they actually scored twice before the whistle blew. From the crease Graham lifted one over Sanders but it hit the bar inside the net and popped out. Play continued and Cole Johnson converted another lose puck in the crease. Once the officials reviewed the video Graham's goal stood so Johnson's goal was erased from the record.

Swift Current held on with some very strong defensive play down the stretch. They didn't allow a single shot in the final 1:44 with Prince Albert's goaltender pulled. Lajoie then scored into an empty net after blocking a Simon Stransky shot and firing it the length of the ice.

Lajoie had a two point with a goal and an assist.

Burman made 33 saves to earn the win for the Broncos, while Sanders stopped 28 of 30 Broncos shots he faced.

Swift Current is now 3-0 against Prince Albert this season and they take over sole possession of second place in the WHL East Division with a 13-7-2-4 record.

The Broncos are in Lethbridge on Friday and visit the Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
