It didn't take long for Glenn Gawdin, Lane Pederson and Max Lajoie to make an impact.

In their first game back since returning from NHL camps the trio combined for six points as the Swift Current Broncos beat Prince Albert 5-2.

"There was a lot of good things tonight," said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. "Pederson has really stepped up his game. He's gotten physically bigger, his skating has gotten better... Gawdin is still the same Gawds hard nosed and hard player with good skill. You throw in a guy like Max on the back end that can read off (teammates)."

Pederson had a goal and two assits, Gawdin scored and had an assists, while Lajoie added a helper in the victory. Artyom Minulin, Tyler Steenbergen and Arthur Miller also scored for Swift Current.

The Broncos again showcased some excellent puck movement that has come with a change of systems this season. Heward also partially credits the playmaking talents of Aleksi Heponiemi for opening the door to more creative puck plays.

"You pick up a guy like (Heponiemi) he sees the ice so well and allows guys to jump into holes," Heward said. "He can hit guys with passes without taking them out of position. I'm not saying it's one guy that has made the total difference but he has made a big difference for a lot of guys on the team. It has allowed us to sure up our top six."

New coach Manny Viveiros earned his second career WHL coaching win in the building he starred as a player in the 80s. It was with the creative style he played during a winning era in Prince Albert.

"We want offence," Heward said. "We're going to try and be a real quick hockey team and that's something Manny has tried to instill in our guys. On the bench we're saying we're never going to take away your creativitiy you just have to do it at the right time. It's a learning process and I'll give our guys credit we made a lot of adjustments after that first game... we made some changes and our guys have come up and been brilliant with it."

Prince Albert actually jumped ahead early on a Simon Stransky re-direction. The Broncos responded when Minulin pinched in undetected for his first of the season. Swift Current's defence has been more aggressive offensively as well this season and that's something they will likely continue.

"We are certainly going to be a puck possession team," Heward said. "You watch all the teams that have good back ends like Doughty in LA. He makes reads when guys control the puck. If you're not turning pucks over and you're not making little mistakes your D is going to be more confident to jump in the play and stay in the play a little bit longer. Puck possession is a huge thing to allow our D to get up in the play."

Steengergen put the Broncos in the lead for the first time as he and Pederson combined for a shorthanded two on one. Swift Current carried a lead into the second period with lots of good opportunities late in the first.

Austin Glover tied it up for Prince Albert early in the second period during some four on four play as the game hit a bit of a lull in the middle of the frame. The Broncos pulled ahead again just after a power play when Gawdin outmuscled the Prince Albert defence on the rebound of a Pederson shot for his first goal of the season.

Swift Current weathered a couple of small storms in the third period while they mostly controlled the play and contained the Raiders. Miller put the game out of reach when he and Connor Chaulk combined to create an offensive zone turnover and Miller made a great move on Raiders goaltneder Ian Scott.

Pederson added an empty net goal.

Travis Child earned the win for the Broncos with 21 saves. Scott made 30 saves in a losing cause.

The Broncos continue a busy weekend on Saturday at home against the Medicine Hat Tigers. They then travel to Brandon on Sunday afternoon. You can catch both games on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Roberstson Family Group Broncos Hockey thirty minutes before puck drop.
