Tyler Steenbergen is quickly becoming “Mr. Overtime.”

The 18-year-old scored the overtime winner for the third time this season as the Swift Current Broncos beat the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 tonight.

“We were getting a little tired at the end of our shift,” Steenbergen said. “(Lane Pederson) made a nice drop pass to me and I realized the d-man was a forward so I made a quick step to the middle, chucked it on net and luckily it went in.”

Steenbergen now sits third in the WHL in goals with 13 and tied for second in the league with 4 game winning goals. He also scored the OT winners in Prince George and at home against Spokane.

“He seems to have knack,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “He finds the openings, he's got a good shot and he's feeling it right now. When you're in a groove good things are happening. He hit the post a couple times as well tonight. He's playing really well right now we need him to step up with some of the guys that are out. In overtime it's 3 on 3 and it benefits a guy like that. He's speedy, he's shifty, he's fast, he finds the holes and a heck of a shot.”

Steenbergen has 4 goals and 2 assists in his last three games. He's not taking the overtime scoring too seriously.

“Oh you know it's nice,” Steenbergen said. “It really doesn't matter who scores in overtime all we want is the win. Getting those two points is huge.”

Calgary jumped on the Broncos early and Carsen Twarynski had a shot deflect in off of him in front only 50 seconds in. Swift Current responded 25 seconds later as Aleksi Heponiemi stole a pass in the offensive zone and ripped his 5th of the season over Cody Porter.

At one point the Hitmen had a 10-2 edge in shots before the Broncos turned the flow of the game around.

“We had a little bit of a rough first period,” Steenbergen said. “We came hard in the second and in the third we battled. We got an unfortunate break in the end but we're still happy with the two points that we got.”

Max Lajoie gave Swift Current a lead late in the second period on the power play. He fired a wrist shot by Porter for his second of the season from the top left circle for a lead the Broncos would hold until the final minute of the third.

That's when Twarynski went to the net to bang home a rebound on what was only Calgary's 5th shot of the period.

“We closed the game out properly just fell a little short when they had an extra man,” Smith said. “We've got to work on draws. We lost a lot of face-offs tonight but that's something we can work on. We defended well, we kept them to the outside and we had some chances to ice it. It was a pretty solid third period.”

Travis Child made 26 saves to earn the win in a rebound effort for him after getting pulled in the overtime loss to Edmonton on Wednesday.

17-year-old Josh Baker made his WHL regular season debut for the Broncos on a line with Owen Blocker and Tanner Mole that had a very solid night.

“He held his own,” Smith said. “He won some board battles, he got some pucks deep and I thought that line when they were out there were a positive for us. For us it's a positive to see them out there playing in the other team's end.”

Swift Current was still without Glenn Gawdin, Conner Chaulk, Matthew Stanley and Riley Stotts due to injury.

The 10-5-2-1 Broncos take on the Hitmen again tomorrow in the back end of a home-and-home in Calgary.

“It's a huge statement game,” Lajoie said. “We need to win that game in Calgary. After tonight they're going to be ready.”

Tonight's game had a bit of an edge to it at times and the Broncos are expecting more of that in Calgary.

“I think we just need to be more physical with them,” Steenbergen said. “We've got to keep them to the outside. We've got to hit. They're a physical team, they like to pressure and we've got to do the same thing back. We can't back down from anything.”
