The first deadline for one of several revised Western Canadian Baseball League season formats was announced as having passed on Thursday.

When the league's Board of Governors first made a statement on the COVID-19 pandemic on April 5, they announced the cut-off date for a full season to be able to start would be May 2.

The WCBL issued a release on the final day of April noting that the earliest they'll now be considering a start to the season will be either late-June or early-July due to the ongoing developments of the pandemic.

"We still want to maintain hope that a partial season can be played should health and government positions on the pandemic chance enough to make it feasible," said WCBL President, Kevin Kvame, in the release. "We know our talented players want to play and we know the communities are looking for positive, family-friendly activities to return. We are embracing that role, whenever that green light is turned on."

With the league spread over both Saskatchewan and Alberta, the league says they will be in cooperation with both province's governments and health officials to determine the best course of action.

The WCBL keyed in on approximately the Father's Day weekend (June 21) or roughly around Canada Day for the next set of potential opening-day dates.

Their April 5 release also noted that logistics for implementing the season around those dates would be decided on in early June. Should mass gatherings still be banned by then, the league said they'd be forced to cancel the 2020 campaign at that point.

The WCBL season typically runs until mid-August.
