A Swift Current Broncos fan might have to double check to make sure today's game wasn't just a repeat of Saturday.

Lane Pederson scored twice in the third period as the Broncos erased a 2-0 deficit but fell 3-2 to Brandon in the shootout.

The result came a day after the Broncos had come back from down 3-0 in Swift Current but lost 4-3 to the Wheat Kings again in the shootout.

“It felt like the same kind of game as last night,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “We did some good things in the first and second period but found ourselves behind. But you've got to be pretty proud of teams that come back. Two nights in a row you're down and come back to get a point. We'll take the points, we've got to learn from this and find a way to score more goals as well.”

Pederson scored four times in the two games all in the third period and scored the tying goal late in both games.

“He's a clutch player,” Smith said. “He's one of our leaders. Him alone not giving up on plays it just shows that he's taken the next step as a player and as a person. He's a key part of what we're doing. We're really happy with his play and we expect that out of our top guys.”

The Broncos have been completely battered by injuries as of late and things got worse this weekend. Arthur Miller didn't make the trip to Brandon after being injured in Saturday's game and Calvin Spencer left today's game.

“When somebody goes down there's opportunities for others,” Smith said. “That's what sport is about. You never want to lose anybody... you can't control injuries. Tonight Calvin going out early in the game put us behind a player but at the end of the day we had some other guys step up. There's no magic formula when guys get injured you work with what you had.”

The latest injuries add to a list that also includes Glenn Gawdin, Riley Stotts, Conner Chaulk amd Matthew Stanley. It opens the door for some young players to learn from bigger minutes than they would normally get.

“This is a good experience for the guys,” Smith said. “Owen Blocker is 16-years-old he's playing major minutes tonight against some pretty good players. That's just one example. Guys have been stepping up over the last two weeks.”

The two teams played a scoreless first period in which both teams had a couple of good chances and kept the damage to a minimum.

Brandon took control in the middle of the second period and Jordan Wharrie gave them a 1-0 lead. Swift Current had a late surge in the period with six shots in the final minute as Logan Thompson held his team's lead with some big stops.

The Wheat Kings added to their lead on a James Shearer power play goal early in the third period. That's when the Broncos seemed to get going and they started pushing back hard.

Pederson deflected in a Colby Sissons one-timer to cut the lead in half. He then tied the game with nine seconds left in regulation when Pederson banged home a Tyler Steenbergen rebound.

Both teams had power plays in overtime and weren't able to cash in. Aleksi Heponiemi hit a post in the final minute on the best chance of the extra frame.

Stelio Mattheos again scored the shootout winner for Brandon as Thompson stopped all three Broncos shooters.

Swift Current is now 10-6-2-3 on the season and a point back of Moose Jaw for second place in the East Division. They're 2-2-1-2 in the seven games since their injury woes started with Gawdin getting hurt against Seattle.

The Broncos continue a busy week hosting Red Deer on Tuesday and Moose Jaw on Friday.
