With temperatures beginning to hover around the -20 mark, and wind chills getting well into the -30s, there becomes a greater importance to protect one's self from the cold elements.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada, John Paul Cragg says, in attempts to avoid issues like hypothermia, it is crucial to know and understand the signs that come along with it.

"It's important if you're outside to make sure you know the signs for hypothermia: shivering, confusion, loss of muscular control, and difficulty walking.

If you're feeling any of these things, or you're with someone who seems to be experiencing those symptoms, it's very important to get inside and get warm as quickly as possible," he said.

John Paul also offered advice on how to stay warm while outdoors.

"The most important thing when you're outside with these temperatures is to dress warm. Make sure you're dressing in layers, make sure you're staying dry, and you have your toque and mitts on. In temperatures like this, you can cool down very quickly," he said.

The Environment Canada Meteorologist says if symptoms are ignored, hypothermia could set in with warmer temperatures than the southwest is experiencing in the days and weeks to come.
