City Council passed the official proclamation for School Bus Safety Week last night.

Chinook School Divison and Rilling Bus brought the request to Council in order to bring awareness to Swift Current motorists.

The awareness brought from School Bus Safety Week is to prevent accidents from happening and is a learning opportunity for everyone. With thirty school buses in transit twice a day in Swift Current, we all have to be bus aware.

Operations Manager of Swift Current Rilling Bus, Leonard Monk, says that School Bus Safety Week is for students, motorists, and bus drivers. Generally motorists in Swift Current are courteous and we want our drivers to be the same way.

However, not one week goes by where bus drivers see motorists who continue to pass a school bus when the bus is stopped either loading or unloading students. "It is hard to describe the feeling you get in your stomach when students are put in danger", Monk says.

Monk mentions that school bus safety is an ongoing thing however, to kickoff the safety week the main message is, when red lights flash please don't pass.

School Bus Safety Week is from August 28th to September 3rd.
