The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) and Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) are warning drivers that wild animals are at large on major highways and back roads and are alerting motorists to use extra caution. This is due to a very sharp increase in collisions with wildlife this year.

Firgures collected in late August show that more than 1,100 more claims were filed over auto collisions with Moose. The largest increase is with Deer at over 1,096 more claims.

SGI paid out more than 35.2 million dollars for both species, and the worst months of the year for collisions with wildlife - October, November and December, are only beginning.

SWF, along with SGI, are engaging in a campaing for public safety to make drivers more aware of wildlife on roads.

The campaign is called Moose On The Loose. Advertising on Highways, Radio, Television and Newspapers is to remind drivers of the dangers that wildlife pose on highways during peak seasons. It also reminds drivers to use extra caution to avoid the consequences, such as injury, death, and automobile damage that can occur in a collision with wildlife.
