Farmers are being encouraged to make an important calculation to ensure they are maximizing their returns during harvest.

The Prarie Machinery Institute in Humbolt is bringest awareness to combine loss as harvest gets underway.

Joel McDonald is the Program Manager of Agricultural Development Services at the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute in Humboldt explains the biggest mistake farmers are making with combine loss.

"The biggest mistake with combined loss is not knowing where you're at, there is no magic number that is acceptable or too much," McDonald said. "So get out there and measure how much you're losing and maybe fine tune the adjustments on your combine, maybe slow down and make an educated decision."

McDonald says he tries to encourage farmers to make decisions based on financial impact.
