Cereals Canada President Cam Dahl says glyphosate is one of the products that the Internet likes to hate.

He notes glyphosate is registered for use in more than 160 countries and there is no major regulatory agency in the world that considers glyphosate a health risk.

However, Dahl says that doesn't seem to make a difference to some people.

"There are all sorts of conspiracy theories built up about all the different diseases that glyphosate causes, and of course, none of those is based on scientific fact. That gets back to the danger of having regulations based on the Internet rather than on science."

In 2015 the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans", however, Dahl says recent lawsuits in the U.S. have brought information to light that calls into question the scientific process used by the agency.

Dahl notes recently there have been doubts raised about glyphosate's approval in the European Union, which would open up potential trade barriers to Canadian exports.
