Goat breeders are gathering in Moose Jaw this weekend for their Summer Extravaganza.

Chelsea Stellek, secretary of the Saskatchewan Goat Breeders Association, says they are expecting a good turnout with about 225 animals registered for the shows.

"We have three breeders coming in from British Columbia, four coming in from Alberta, a majority from Saskatchewan and Manitoba," she said. "And then we have the sale animals coming in all the way from Ontario, B.C. and Alberta."

Today’s events at the Golden Mile Arena include the start of the Triple Sanctioned Junior Dairy Show and Meat Goat show.

Stellek says there’s a growing interest in the industry.

"There's a rapid demand for breeding stock, niche products with our ethnic population gradually increasing daily, there seems to be a constant demand for chevon goat meat," she said.

Saturday is the Senior Canadian Goat Society Triple Sanctioned show, more seminars and their banquet while Sunday’s highlight is the Kids for Kids sale at 1 p.m. followed by the Breeding Stock Sale.
