The Canola Council of Canada wants farmers to voice their opinion about Health Canada's proposed phase out of the insecticide known as 'Matador'.

Health Canada says it is phasing it out due to safety concerns.

Brian Innes, vice president of government relations with the Canola Council, explains what Matador is used for.

"It's a product used in canola to control a lot of pests, so it controls a lot of insects like flea beetles, cutworms, swiss army worms, diamondback moths. It's used by a lot of growers to keep these insects from eating their canola."

Innes adds what is would mean if growers were to lose this product.

"Well this product, in particular, is quite valuable for growers in that in controls quite a wide variety of pests that attack canola, so losing this product would be a serious concern for canola growers and as an industry as a whole."

Innes notes it's important for Canada to align its regulation with other countries such as the U.S.

The proposed re-evaluation of Matador is open for comment until September 21st.
