Herbicide Resistance is becoming more of an issue for farmers.

Eric Johnson is a Research Assistant with the Weed Management Program at the U of S.

Right now about 50% of our Prairie fields have Group 1 resistant Wild Oat adding their seeing Group 2 resistance building now as well.

"The main point is to be tank mixing different modes of action, that's the initial thing. Look at diversifying their cropping system if they can somewhat. Those in the wheat-lentil rotation, it's setting itself up for a real disaster, so they might have to look at other crops."

He notes producers will have to start looking at some of the older products like Avadex, Edge., Trifluralin. He says a lot of herbicide didn’t go down in the fall.

"I would say be prepared. Start thinking about your weed management program as soon as you can. It's going to be a real challenge this year, I think. There's products that they typically put on in the fall that are going to have to go on in the spring, and if they do put them on in the spring, they'll have to go on as early as possible, so hopefully the weather cooperates."

He says it will be a real challenge especially in areas that still have crop left out.
