A tough night for everyone in the rodeo arena last night during Canadian Western Agribition’s Pro Rodeo.

A bareback horse landed wrong at the end of the ride, resulting in a spinal injury to the animal.

The horse #7 Rusty Rein was owned by C-5 Rodeo Company.

Gillian Grant is C-5’s Rodeo Co-ordinator.

"The horse came down and the Canadian Western Agribition, vets, rodeo committee and all the personal staff there responded to it, appropriately and dealt with the issue. Unfortanelty the horse had to be euthanized, we're really thankful for how everybody has dealt with this. This is a very rare occasion and something that was unpreventable, these thing have happened before, but like I said extremely rare," Grant said.

The Cowboy riding the horse was not injured in the incident.

Gillian Grant is the Rodeo Co-ordinator for C-5 Rodeo Company out of Lac la Biche, Alberta and had owned the horse for about a year.

"These animals are a livelyhood, the rodeo athletes mean a lot to us. We do our best to make sure they're taken care of to the best of their ability and they have the best health and nutrition. Somethings are unpreventable and it happens. We're really proud and thankful for how everyone responded to the situation," she said.

Grant says this is the first time they’ve lost a horse at a rodeo, the horse is valued at about 20 to 30 thousand dollars.
