Starting today, Japan is increasing its tariff on frozen beef imports from Canada and the U-S.

Tariffs are going up from 38.5 to 50%; while Australia’s 25% tariff which was negotiated in its bilateral deal with Japan remains the same.

President of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association - Dan Darling.

"It's happening because of the quantity of beef product that's been going into Japan," he explained. "That 38.5% was only good up until a certain amount of product after you get over a certain amount of product they have the ability to raise the tariff and that's exactly what they're doing."

He says they need to find out the reason for the increase and see if there’s a way around it.

"We're going to continue to push our government to either get this TPP deal through with 11 countries or work on a bilateral deal," he said.

He notes they continue to work with the government to get trade deals made that will benefit the agriculture economy.
