Saskatchewan Pulse Growers are holding their Regional Meetings this week.

Yesterday’s presentation was in Rosetown with today’s meeting taking place in Swift Current.

We could see a renewed interest in growing chickpeas this year.

The question will be, however, do we have enough chickpea seed for 2017?

Bunyamin Ta’ran the Chickpea Breeder at the U of S Crop Development Centre says seed availability may be an issue:

Ta'ran said, "Looking back at 2016 with the challenging weather that we had, seed quality or seed availability will be very limited so my suggestion for you, if you want to grow chickpeas is, start planning early, look for the seed early,

don't be too late."

He notes last year producers seeded around 180,000 acres and notes acreage could be lower this year with issues around seed availability.
