The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association [SCA] cattle marketing workshop has been well received.

The group held their District Annual General Meetings yesterday in Brock and Swift Current.

Running the Swift Current workshop was Joe Jackson with JGL Livestock, a Director for District 2.

He says the cattle market is stronger this year with prices probably about $300 a head better for the producer than the same time last year.

"Cattle feeders are coming off profitable years plus the futures and contract prices that are available allow them to pay that kind of money," he said. "If the margins are their the price per hundred to the producer is not that important. As long as they are getting more which the market is giving them that, the producers a reeking the benefits."

Jackson says when it comes to marketing he has one key take-home message for producers.

"If you are going to sell your calves, take them off the cow," he said. "Take them to where ever you are selling them that day, don't keep them at home another day, another two days or a week, if you are going to keep them home, and wean the calves do it for 45 days, but anything short of that no. Take them off the cow and take them to the market, the calf will get sick if you don't."

Jackson adds he feels better buying cattle this year than last year.
