A number of areas in the Southern part of province hit with frost over the last couple of nights.

Shannon Friesen is the acting cropping management specialist with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture.

She says depending on where you are located the temperature hit anywhere from just above zero down to minus 4.

"Most of the crop is advanced enough that we should not see much damage at all," Friesen said. "There are still some crops that were a bit immature out there, in particular, some of the canola crops and even some of the cereals. Hopefully we see the minimal damage, but of course, we will have to wait and find out.

She notes Canola is one crop that doesn’t handle frost well.

"If the Canola is mature and cold enough the pods can actually split open, while if it’s immature and has more moisture the green content can get locked in."

Provincially 75% of the crop is in the bin, well ahead of the 5 year average of 58% complete.

Friesen added that farmers were pleased to see some moisture but not too happy with the frost that hit parts of southern Saskatchewan this week.
