A Durum variety developed at Agriculture Canada’s Swift Current Research and Development Centre has won another major honour.

Strongfield which was developed by Dr John Clarke and his team has been named the 2-16-17 Seed of the year West.

Todd Hyra, SeCan’s Business Manager for Western Canada says Strongfield has been SeCan’s number one selling durum variety for the last 10 years:

"Strongfield's had a great agronomics package in terms of its yield. it's standability, it's maturity is in line with other Durums at the time," he said. "It has a very nice colour, a deep yellow colour that is really appealing to Durum end users

so it has the whole package in addition to low Cadmium rates."

Strongfield was the first commercially successful durum variety with low cadmium, essentially saving the Canadian durum industry from potential European non-tariff trade barriers related to heavy metals in food products.
