A prairie agriculture carbon summit – growing sustainability – is underway at the Saskatoon Inn.

The event is being organized by the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan.

The group's president Todd Lewis said agriculture plays a significant role in sequestering carbon.

"Certainly in Saskatchewan we've been the leaders in low-carbon agriculture right from the beginning and certainly a lot of technology - be it direct seeding or sectional shut offs, or any number of different things that come up in technologies that have improved the carbon footprint - a lot of them originated in Saskatchewan or were adopted early in the province," said Lewis.

In the APAS submission to the federal government's consultation process they noted that Saskatchewan crop producers currently sequester 8.5 megatonnes of carbon through improved management practices each year, while prairie pastures sequester over 2 billion tonnes.
