A Texas Longhorn trophy steer from the U-S is attracting a lot of attention at Canadian Western Agribition.

He’s owned by Kristopher Johnson from I M Bar Longhorn Ranch from Big Horn, Wyoming.

Johnson says they’ve been raising Longhorns since 1992 and have about 35 head including  “Jim Reeves” the 8-year-old Trophy Steer they brought up to Agribition.

“His horns are 110 ½” from one tip to one tip. From what I know he’s the tenth biggest steer that I know of that’s ever been measured. So that’s really cool to own him obviously, pretty prestigious.”

Deb Lesyk is President of the Canadian Texas Longhorn Association and says they were honored that Kristopher and “Jim Reeves” were willing to make the trip up to Regina.

Lesyk and her husband Dwight Overlid have Double D Arena at Outlook and have been raising Texas Longhorns for 30 years and have now been joined in the operation by their grandson.

She says the Texas Longhorn's are pretty easy doing animals that travel and have great browsing ability.

“They’ll utilize any type of ground, and so with us, we don’t have a lot of pasture and we don’t have a lot of good pasture. They’ll go in with their horns and they can lift up places that another animal won’t go and get the grass that’s under the bushes or whatever.”

She notes one thing that people may not know is that it's very important with Longhorns to have good shelter for them in the winter so that they can get out of the wind because they can freeze the tips of their horns.

The Canadian Texas Longhorn Association holds their Select Sale Tuesday, November 20th from 2 pm to 4 pm in the John Deere Sale Arena at Canadian Western Agribition.
