The Swift Current Kal Tire 18U AAA 57’s are playing host to the Sask Selects baseball tournament through the long weekend, and the schedule includes their second annual pink game supporting two young girls in the community facing health challenges.

The Saturday game against the Sask Five Marlins will support “Bella Brave” Thomson as the 10-year-old continues to recover from a life-saving bowel transplant, and seven-year-old Rustyn Paul who was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2023.

“We have a couple of members of the team that are pretty close to those two girls,” said Kurri Darby, the coach of the 18U 57’s. “We know they’re going through some tough times financially, spiritually and emotionally, and we just thought as a group, what could we do? Baseball is a great sport, being outside in fabulous weather is something that puts a smile on everyone’s face, so we thought let’s do something here.”

Last season’s pink game raised over $3,000 that was split between the two families as the community rallied around both Bella and Rustyn.

“It seems like every time you turn around, somebody’s doing something for these families, which speaks to the character of who they are,” Darby added. “You see the Thomson family on TikTok and Instagram spreading joy, and you see the Paul family who are part of the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital advertisements, and Rustyn and Bella are just absolute joys to be around.”

First pitch for Saturday’s game is at 11:30 a.m. from Mitchell Field. Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to donate to the Thomson and Paul families, and the team will also raise money through a concession and raffle.

The U18 57’s opened the Sask Selects Tournament on Friday morning with a 3-2 win over the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. They will also face the Zone 7 Sun Devils on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. and the Calgary Bisons on Monday at 12:00 noon in other tournament action.

Meanwhile, the 15U and 13U AAA 57’s are competing at the Legasse Tournament in Regina this weekend. The 15U’s face the South East A’s this afternoon, and the Regina White Sox and Calgary Bucks on Saturday, while the 13U’s take on the Cardinals tonight followed by the Regina Wolfpack and Lumsden Cubs on Saturday.
