For the Swift Current Broncos no game is ever over.

Down 3-0 midway through the third period tonight they stormed back and forced overtime in a shootout loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Broncos have now erased 4-2, 4-0 and 3-0 third period deficits at different times this season.

“It's great to stand here and say that we got a point rather than just an outright loss,” said Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward. “Good character to come back and battle, but it's just something that we can't keep doing. You keep getting down three goals to good teams you're not going to be able to come back all the time.”

Lane Pederson scored twice for Swift Current, while Calvin Spencer had their other third period goal.

The Broncos played solid hockey for most of the first two periods despite breakdowns in the final minutes of each period which pushed Brandon ahead. They caught fire in the third period outshooting Brandon 14-6.

“When we started playing the right way in the third period we generated a lot of opportunities that weren't coming our way in the first two periods,” Heward said. “We were on the wrong side of the pucks sand were playing loose.”

Swift Current's first goal came a little over a minute after and Arthur Miller fight with Zach Russell that may have sparked the Broncos.

“The fact that that happened and we went that direction who knows,” Heward said. “It's nice to see guys stand up for their teammates. For me it was just an opportunity to have us settle things down and... get on the offence. In the third period we started to become a little smarter and we had a ton of chances in the overtime.”

The Broncos had a full two minute 4 on 3 in overtime and couldn't find the winner. Reid Duke and Stelio Mettheos scored for the Wheat Kings in the shootout, while Aleksi Heponiemi had Swift Current's lone marker. The Broncos are now 3-3 in overtime this season and 0-2 in the shootout.

Brandon scored twice in the final minute of periods. After a pretty even first period where the Broncos likely out-chanced the Wheat Kings they got caught deep in the offensive zone and Mattheos made them pay with only nine seconds left before break.

Ty Lewis put Brandon ahead 2-0 midway through the second period on the power play from a scramble around Swift Current's new. The Wheat Kings then seemed to take firm control as Schael Higson's point shot beat Travis Child with Mattheos again going to the late in the final minute of the second period.

The Broncos chipped away at the lead with a power play goal from Pederson as he wired a one-timer over Jordan Papirny. Calvin Spencer closed the gap further as the knocked his own rebound out of the air and in on another power play. Pederson eventually tied it off a Kale Clague turnover with just over two minutes to play in the third period.

The two teams meet again Sunday afternoon in Brandon.

“The way we played in the third if we can replicate that tomorrow and moving on to a busy week we're going to have a chance to win,” Heward said. “The guys just have to realize that when it comes down to crunch time they have to make sure they buy in and just do the right things.”

Kole Gable made his debut for Swift Current tonight and was solid enough he got bigger minutes as the game went on.

“It's hard to get traded to another team and come in to learn their systems,” Heward. “I thought he played very well. He's a good skater and he did a lot of good things offensively. To come in and not be lost, to come in and fit in right away says volumes.”

The Broncos also dressed call-up Josh Baker for the third straight game.

Child made 26 saves on 29 Brandon shots in a losing cause. Papirny's 33 saves helped the Wheat Kings secure the win.

Special teams favoured Swift Current with the Broncos going 2 for 5 on the power play compared to Brandon going 1 for 4.

The Broncos were still without Glenn Gawdin, Conner Chaulk, Riley Stotts and Matthew Stanley due to injury.
