The City of Swift Current recently came into an unexpected windfall.

The Aquatic Centre was expected to cost the city $800,000 for a roof replacement project after iRC Building Sciences Group Inc. found that the existing roof was in dire need of immediate repairs.

Expectations don't always come true through, especially in estimations. Duncan Roofing of Moose Jaw was selected for the job based on their bid which came in at $621,000, well under budget.

Jim Jones, general manager of community services for the City of Swift Current, described how the price tag isn't the only criteria that were discussed when selecting the bid.

"The Rimkus Group and the City administration met and evaluated all bids," said Jones. "With the criteria for selection being; overall values considering cost, schedule and methodology, as well as the quality of the bid submission."

The City believes Duncan Roofing has the history and reputation for this level of work being done to an acceptable standard.

After an assessment performed by iRC Building Sciences Group Inc. that deemed the roof is in need of rapid replacement within the year, Duncan Roofing will be replacing the segment of the roof that has the worst wear and tear.

That work includes the removal of the existing spray foam roof system, down to the deck, installing an appropriate vapour retarder, installing new thermal insulation and high-performing membrane, the installation of new membrane flashings ensuring complete coverage on vertical surfaces of parapets and high walls, installing new metal flashings, perimeters and penetrations, as well as replacing pitch pockets, sleeves and cones at rood penetrations with appropriate maintenance free flashings.

The project would begin May 1st, 2023, and expects to be finished on July 21st, 2023.
