Doctors to Damar Hamlin: "You've won the game of life"

Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin is showing “substantial improvement” in his recovery from his cardiac arrest in a game on Monday night in Cincinnati.

Hamlin remains in intensive care, but the Bills said in an update on Thursday that he appears to be neurologically intact, and his lungs continue to heal. Doctors added that he is also communicating with family members and others at his bedside.

Hamlin asked in a written note "Did we win?", referring to the abandoned game between the Bills and Bengals. Doctors replied, "The answer is yes, Damar, you won. You've won the game of life."

Meanwhile, the NFL announced Thursday that the suspended game has officially been cancelled and will not be completed. Since the matchup carried major implications in the AFC playoff picture, the league will be discussing the possibility of having the AFC Championship game on January 29 played at a neutral site.
