Purebred cattle producers are getting ready for calving season. Purebred cattle producers are getting ready for calving season.  Many purebred producers like to calve early so the animals are a little bigger for the fall show circuit.   Jim Graham is a Livestock Agrologist with Saskatchewan Agriculture.  He says calving now during this cold snap can be rough on producers and the animals with windchill values around -30 or lower.  Graham says when it’s this cold it’s important to watch cattle closely adding that calving in a barn is key since a newborn calf wouldn’t last long in these temperatures.  He adds producers may want to increase and move minerals and supplements closer to shelter during a cold snap.
