High school football action will return to the gridiron in Swift Current over the Labour Day weekend.

The Swift Current Comp Colts football team will kick off their regular season Saturday afternoon when they host the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones.

Colts Head Coach Derek Murdoch said the squads has been focusing on conditioning for the long season ahead since practice opened on August 22.

"Guys are running around having some fun and working hard," he said. "I think they're pretty excited about putting on real jerseys and battling someone on Saturday."

The pair of teams met twice last season, once in the regular season with Moose Jaw winning 51-14. Their second matchup was for the Bronze medal in the SHSAA 5A South Rural Football League with the Cyclones winning 53-13.

"Central is going to be a good football team," he said. "They handled us a couple of times last year. They're going to have lots of bodies and I have a lot of respect for coach [Colin] Belsher and the way he does things there. They have good systems and they execute, so we're going to have to be ready to go."

Swift Current graduated 16 players from last year's roster leaving a large void on the team leadership-wise.

"We're asking the older guys that we have, we don't have as many, but we're asking them to fill some roles they didn't see themselves in last year," he said. "We're very excited about the young football guys that we have and we're going to keep trying to learn each week."

Kickoff at Colts Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
