While this time of year is considered magical, the hardships of life don’t always pause for the holidays.

Thanks to the City of Swift Current and SwiftLink, folks that are having a difficult holiday season can gather together for a free Christmas Community Meal.

Krista Caswell, the community recreation coordinator for the City, said there are a total of 350 meals available.

"Anyone can sign up for the meal deliveries," she said. "Anyone that is struggling or needing a meal for Christmas, they can definitely register for that."

This year, residents have the option of choosing a sit-down meal at the Salvation Army on December 21, or have a feast delivered to their doorstep on Christmas Eve.

The deadline to register for either meal is December 15, and folks can do so by visiting www.swiftcurrent.ca/xmasdinner.

"The Community Christmas Dinner has been a part of our community for many, many years," Caswell said. "I think it's the time of year where we all recognize that different people have different struggles, and it's so nice to be able to give back to our community at this time of year. We're just excited to be able to provide it."

However, to get these meals to the families that need them, volunteers are still needed.

"For December 24 we do need quite a few volunteers," she said. "I'm looking about 15 more volunteers would be great. So, what their jobs entail is they help us package up the meal into the delivery bags and then we give them the delivery addresses and they go and take them to the homes and spread their Christmas cheer."

Anyone interested in signing up to help out with packing and deliveries can contact Krista directly, at k.caswell@swiftcurrent.ca or 306-778-2787.

Caswell also expressed gratitude to the many community groups, organizations and businesses that have come together to help make these nights a Christmas tradition.

"Without their support we would not be able to provide this meal free of charge," she said. "So, a huge shout out to our community for being able to come together and provide this."
