As the October 21 federal election draws closer, one man is looking to translate his experience into the area's MP leadership race.

Kelly Williamson said that his diverse background through agriculture and leadership experience and abilities will make him a good replacement for the area's current MP, David Anderson.

Anderson will not be seeking reelection this year, which has prompted some political hopefuls to throw their names into the race for the chance to represent the Cypress Hills-Grasslands riding in Ottawa.

Williamson has been the reeve of the RM of Whiska Creek since 2016, and also served three years as a councillor in that RM as well. He is also the director of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, a past president of the Saskatchewan Forage Council, among many other titles he's held.

He said that he would do his research about the position to ensure that he was well suited with the position.

"I would have to draw on my past experiences to fill this role, but I'd also have to leverage the people and network around me to gain the knowledge to understand the dynamic that I'm throwing myself in... I'm not going to claim that I can just jump right in, I'm going to have to work hard in there, but I think my past experiences give me the fundamentals to be able to do that."

The volunteer firefighter said that his experience would allow him to be able to understand the bureaucratic environment surrounding the role, and the pitfalls which plague it.

He said that he would be looking forward to dealing with topics such as agriculture, pipelines, the carbon tax, oversight of instruction, and making sure that the area has a functioning economic and working landscape.

"Environment needs to be addressed, but I do not think that the carbon tax is the way to do it, and I think that tax needs to be revoked."

The University of Saskatchewan graduate said that his open door policy would allow him to understand and intelligently represent the issues in the area on Parliament Hill.

He said that he is looking forward to competing against all the other candidates who were looking to pick up where Anderson will leave off.
