Since the 1990's, Environment Canada has been posting the ultra-violet radiation index.

These are natural sun rays that hit the planet's surface and are particularly strong in the summer months.

Too much exposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer.

Anne-Marie Paul-Freeman of Environment Canada says that when the index is rated at 8 or high, as is the case today, it's best to stay out of the sun from around 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and wear sunglasses and sunscreen if you must be exposed to the sun's rays.

Paul-Freeman says June and July are usually the months with the highest UV radiation.
