Eight high school students in the southwest were granted $1000 by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC), last month.

A total of one-hundred students across Saskatchewan have been granted scholarships this year upon completion of the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Program to embark on careers in the skilled trades.

Director of communications for SATCC, Chelsea Coupal, said the SYA Program is offered to students in over three-hundred high schools in Saskatchewan to create awareness of the boundless opportunities in the trades.

"The SATCC oversees the administration of this program but relies heavily on educators in schools to work with students and deliver this program to them directly," Coupal said.

There are 12 challenges that make up the SYA Program; four challenges for each three levels.  These activities range from interviews with journey-persons, to attending a career fair, to researching and reporting on a trade.

According to Coupal, registering as apprentices within five years of program completion has significant tangible benefits.

Some of these perks are three-hundred trade time hours, waived registration fee, and waived level 1 technical training tuition.

Recipients are first nominated by their school's SY representative and then selected by a committee of SATCC members.

Students have two years to redeem their $1,000, as long as they register as an apprentice in Saskatchewan and successfully complete their level 1 technical training, or complete a pre-employment program.

The lucky eight students to receive a scholarship on June 24 from southwest Saskatchewan include:

  • Justin Delorme - Assiniboia Composite High School
  • Rhett Franklin - Ponteix SchoolLafleche
  • Hadley Bouffard - Central School
  • Ryder Meyers - Lucky Lake School
  • Shay Fyke - Leader Composite School
