Swift Current’s long-held tradition of Father’s Day soapbox racing took place on Central Ave N downtown.

Due to weather conditions, the event couldn’t be held on Father’s Day last Sunday, but the sun came out yesterday morning and racers took to downtown to keep the tradition going.

President of the races in Swift Current, Derek, said "The races started thirty-nine years ago as a way to get kids outside with their fathers."

He added that COVID has affected the magnitude of the event and they are seeing a smaller number of participants than in previous years, however, they are hoping to see it back in full swing next Father's Day.

Parents and kids are equally as involved in the races, despite the cars being only big enough for the little humans.  The crew of people that helps set up, operate, and take down the event, is made up of volunteers and parents of the contestants.

Yesterday, ramps were placed on the four-hundred block of Central Avenue N, where the cars were dropped for momentum to speed down the hill.  A checkered flag marked the end on the three-hundred block in front of numerous local businesses.

From the starting point to the finish line on either side of the street, residents sat on their lawns or the sidewalk to watch the races up close.
