A number of Baseball Canada national championships are underway with local players representing Saskatchewan.
Emma Murdoch and team Saskatchewan fell 13-11 to Manitoba and 8-2 to Quebec in the opening day of the girls’ 16U championship in Summerside, PEI. Saskatchewan will face New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador today before wrapping up the round-robin against the hosts on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Aiden Kilshaw, Mason Fauser and the 15U team lost 4-1 to BC before beating the hosts 7-6 at the Ray Carter Cup in Laval, Quebec. Saskatchewan will face Quebec and Ontario today.
Dane Irwin and coaches Joe Carnahan and Taylor MacDonnell helped Saskatchewan double up Manitoba 14-7 in the opening game of the national 13U championship in Woodstock, Ontario. Saskatchewan faces Ontario and Quebec today.
The tournaments continue through Sunday.
Racing returns to Kinetic Park this weekend
The Swift Current Stock Car Association will return to the track for the first time in two months with two nights of racing this weekend at Kinetic Exhibition Park.
The minis, streets and IMCA modifieds will race tonight and Saturday starting at 7:00pm. The final race weekend of the season for the SCSCA is on September 16 and 17.
Jays drop series in Baltimore
Anthony Santander and Cedric Mullins homered as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Camden Yards Thursday night.
The Orioles won the season series with the Jays 10-3. Toronto dropped to 1.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros, who hold the last two wild card spots in the AL.
The Jays start a weekend homestand with the Cleveland Guardians tonight with Chris Bassitt starting for Toronto in the opener.
Bombers pull away for win over Als
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers capitalized on three turnovers in the third quarter to pull away for a 47-17 win over the Montreal Alouettes last night at IG Field. Zach Collaros threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns as the West Division-leading Bombers won their fifth game in a row.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders will host Winnipeg in the Labour Day Classic next Sunday. CFL action tonight has the Toronto Argonauts hosting the Calgary Stampeders.
