Broncos Rookie Camp underway

The Swift Current Broncos wrapped up the first day of rookie camp with a couple of scrimmages on Thursday at InnovationPlex. 

Luke Mistelbacher had two goals and two assists as Team Debrusk beat Team Lowry 5-3 in the opening scrimmage. Tyson Yaremko had two goals for Team Lowry. Later, Ty Coupland had two goals and two helpers as Team Gawdin beat Team Cave 6-3. Otto Hanson had a goal and an assist for Team Cave. 

Rookie camp continues today with four scrimmages and then the main training camp will get underway on Sunday. The Broncos’ first pre-season game is next Friday in Moose Jaw. 

Colts Football kicking off on Saturday

High school football will start up this weekend as the Swift Current Comp High School Colts will host Moose Jaw's Central Collegiate Cyclones in the opener of the SHSAA 5A rural 12-aside season.

The game is a rematch of last season's third-place game and the Colts will have a significant change in leadership with 16 players graduating last year.

Kick-off is at 1:00pm from Colts Field at the high school.

CFL Labour Day Weekend starts tonight

The CFL's signature Labour Day Weekend kicks off tonight as the Montreal Alouettes welcome the Ottawa Redblacks.

The Als (4-6) are a game back of the East Division-leading Toronto Argonauts (5-5), who visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in their traditional Labour Day game on the holiday Monday.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers square off at a sold-out Mosaic Stadium for the Labour Day Classic on Sunday at 4:00pm. 

Blue Jays start 10-game road swing in Pittsburgh

The Toronto Blue Jays will start a 10-game road trip tonight when they start a three-game weekend set with the Pittsburgh Pirates. All-Star pitcher Alek Manoah will get the start for Toronto in the opener.

The Jays, who sit third in the AL East and in the final American League wild card spot, won just two games on a six-game homestand this week, including a 7-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday and a three-game sweep at the hands of the LA Angels.

The road trip will also take the Blue Jays to Baltimore and Texas.

Shapovalov moves on at US Open

Denis Shapovalov picked up a four-set win over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena to move on to the third round of the US Open on Thursday. Shapovalov is the only Canadian remaining on the men's singles draw at the grand slam.

Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino play third-round matches today with the 2019 champion facing 17th seed Caroline Garcia of France tonight, and Marino, who's appearing in the third round of a major for the first time since the 2011 French Open, facing China's Zhang Shuai in an earlier match.

Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez, who was eliminated from women's singles on Wednesday, advanced to the second round of women’s doubles with her partner Daria Saville of Australia after picking up an upset win over second-seeded Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff. 

And last night, Serena and Venus Williams played in what was likely their final doubles match together, falling in straight sets to Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova. Serena, who plans to retire after the US Open, plays a third-round match against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic tonight.
