Broncos on the ice for rookie camp today

The Swift Current Broncos' rookie camp gets underway today with practices starting at 8:00am this morning and two scrimmages at 4:00pm and 7:15pm. All the on-ice sessions are open to the public at InnovationPlex.

Main training camp starts on Sunday with the Blue vs. White Intrasquad game coming up on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm. The Broncos open the WHL pre-season against the Moose Jaw Warriors on September 9 in Moose Jaw.

Cubs beat Blue Jays to avoid sweep

The Chicago Cubs jumped out to a 5-0 lead early and never looked back as they beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 on Wednesday to avoid a sweep. 

Alejandro Kirk and Cavan Biggio had home runs in a losing cause, and Jays starter Mitch White struck out five batters. 

The Blue Jays are off today before they head to Pittsburgh for a weekend series with the Pirates.

Quarterfinal Thursday at Women's Worlds

Canada takes on Sweden today in the quarterfinals of the World Women's Hockey Championship in Denmark.

The Canadians are coming off a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Americans on Tuesday night for their first loss of the tournament. Canada is the reigning world and Olympic champion in women's hockey.

Switzerland beat Japan 2-1 in a shootout to win today's first quarterfinal early this morning, while the US is facing Hungary and Czechia is taking on Finland in the other games today.

Serena keeps rolling, two Canadians bounced at US Open

Serena Williams’ farewell at the US Open will continue for at least one more match after she knocked off number two seed Anett Kontaveit in three sets to move on to the third round. 

The 23-time grand slam winner will face Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in her next singles match on Friday, but she’ll team up with sister Venus in a rare doubles match under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium tonight. 

Meanwhile, Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino won their second-round matches, while Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime were eliminated. Denis Shapolvalov will play his second-round match this afternoon against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena.

Coach Dickenson sidelined ahead of Labour Day Classic

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on Wednesday that head coach Craig Dickenson has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining as per CFL policy. 

He is expected to return to the team in time for Sunday’s Labour Day Classic against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. 

In other CFL news, the BC Lions got some insurance at quarterback by picking up Vernon Adams, Jr. from the Montreal Alouettes in exchange for a first-round pick in next year’s draft. 

The move comes as Lions starter Nathan Rourke recovers from a foot injury that could sideline him for the rest of the season. 

Adams, Jr. threw for 294 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in five games with the Als this season.

Wilson extends with Denver Broncos

Quarterback Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos have reportedly agreed to a five-year extension worth $245 million. The new deal kicks in after the 2024 season and keeps Wilson in the Mile High City for the next seven years. 

The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in March in exchange for three players and five draft picks. He spent 10 seasons with the Seahawks and won Super Bowl XLVIII against the Broncos in 2014.
