Blue Jays win wild one in Philly

The Toronto Blue Jays’ bats came to life in an 18-11 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. 

Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Jackie Bradley, Jr. added a three-run shot of his own in the ninth as the Jays scored runs in every inning except for the fourth and picked up 21 hits as a team. 

The win, along with losses by Tampa Bay, Seattle and Baltimore, increased Toronto’s lead over those three teams for the first American League wild card spot.

Judge blasts 60th homer to lead Yankees' comeback win over Pirates

Aaron Judge hit his 60th home run of the season and Giancarlo Stanton smashed a walk-off grand slam in a wild ninth inning as the New York Yankees came back to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8. 

Judge’s homer tied the great Babe Ruth and he is one back of another former Yankee, Roger Maris, for the American League single season home run record.

The Yankees lead the AL East by 5.5 games over the Blue Jays and the two teams play a three-game series at Rogers Centre next week.

MacKinnon signs record extension with Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have signed star forward Nathan MacKinnon to an eight-year contract extension that will make him the highest-paid player in NHL history with a deal worth an average of $12.6 million US per season. 

The $100.8-million total value of the contract is the fourth largest in league history behind those signed by Alex Ovechkin, Shea Weber and Sidney Crosby. $85.34 million of his contract will be paid out in signing bonuses. 

MacKinnon scored 88 points in the regular season and 24 in the playoffs last season as the Avalanche captured the Stanley Cup. 

Cameron Judge suspended one game by CFL

Calgary Stampeders linebacker Cameron Judge has been suspended one game for punching BC Lions wide receiver Lucky Whitehead. 

The incident happened at the end of the Lions’ overtime win over the Stampeders last week. Judge had nine tackles and a sack in that game.

The two teams play again on Saturday in Vancouver.
