The cat's out of the bag, as the City of Swift Current has agreed to a new lease with the Swift Current SPCA.

The lease was renewed during last week's city council meeting, wherein the lease was set up much in the same fashion as it has been for the last 30 years of the SPCA's operations, with only a few major changes.

Presenting the renewed lease agreement to city council was Kathy Dand, development officer for the City of Swift Current.

"The SPCA is an extremely valuable organization," said Dand. "One that is certainly worthy of supporting and providing assistance to whenever possible."

The City will be offering its support by not only extending the duration of this new lease to 30 years. This will be on the same plot of land they have been leasing since 1990 from the City, in McIntyre Industrial Park. The price will remain the same, at the steep price of $1 a year.

The other big change will be expanding the size of the lease. Originally, the lease was only a partial segment of the lot the facility was built on. It's expected in the next couple of years, they will need to build a new structure to house all their operations. Anticipating this now is important to maintaining the SPCA's effectiveness in the future.

"Their board of directors and staff have dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy towards the health and safety of the dogs and cats that come through their doors," said Dand.
