The Swift Current Child Care Centre is looking to intensify their existing discretionary use to help accommodate more kids by utilizing the house next door.

This change would reportedly increase the daycare facility’s available spots from 48 to 73. Such a change was brought to the last city council meeting, with extensive diagrams showing the locations of 285 and 287 13th Ave NE to meet parking requirements and zoning bylaws.

Kathy Dand, the development officer for Swift Current presented the case to the city council on June 24.

“The city has received a development permit application from the centre for a change of use,” stated Dand. “This location is within the R2 low density multi-unit dwelling residential district, which allows daycare centres as a discretionary use... any change or intensification to an approved discretionary use requires approval by Council resolution.”

Not only does the fully government-subsidized establishment wish to expand to include the neighbouring house, but they also wish to renovate it to better serve as a daycare facility. According to the City zoning bylaw #24, the place must meet all site regulations and development standards and must not endanger or be a nuisance to the surrounding area or impede further development.

The next step will be sending notices of the council’s consideration to the homes surrounding the daycare, followed by a public hearing on July 22.
