The City of Swift Current and Southwest Saskatchewan Pride have declared July 7 to 13 as the ninth annual Pride Week.

Theo Houghtaling, member at large with Southwest Sask. Pride, was at the last city council meeting to make the proclamation.

"In those nine years and in the years prior, building up toward founding Southwest Saskatchewan Pride, we've seen and made so much change," he said. "Steps forward, steps back, steps taken and retaken. One of our biggest successes has been the opening of the local Pride centre."

The organization opened a drop-in space at the Dickson Community Centre two years ago which has recently relocated to downtown Swift Current.

Over the next several days community members will be able to engage in a variety of events to celebrate and support 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.

"On behalf of the Southwest Saskatchewan Pride Board and of the broader 2SLGBTQ+ community here in the southwest I invite you all to attend these events and to help grow a culture of inclusion," Houghtaling added. "It's all of our responsibility. Every year it becomes a little easier to be yourself in Swift Current."
