After watching leads disappear twice in Yorkton on Wednesday, the Swift Current 57's were not about to have that happen again Friday night at Mitchell Field.

In what started out as a back-and-forth affair, the Swift Current bats stayed hot throughout the game as they rolled to an 18-5 win over the Melville Millionaires.

"It feels great," said 57's utility man Bodie Cooper after the win. "Especially after the way we lost in Yorkton, having tons of chances to win both those games, to come out today and capitalize on those chances was huge for us."

Swift Current certainly made the most of their opportunities throughout the game, but especially early on.

The 57's first five runs of the contest were all scored with two-out in the inning.

Swift Current was able to take advantage of back-to-back two-out Melville errors to score two runs in the 1st inning.

Then, after Melville to a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd, the 57's responded in the bottom half with a two-out RBI single off the bat of Cooper.

Still tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 4th, 57's right fielder had when of the most influential at-bats of the game.

Once again, with two outs in the inning, Canas fouled off five pitches before hitting the ninth pitch of the at-bat over the fence for his first home-run of the season, while giving Swift Current a 5-3 lead.

"It felt good," Canas said talking about his two-run shot. "It was a long at-bat, battling back and forth with the pitcher, but I was able to find a pitch I could drive and put a good swing on it."

"When you get to two outs you have to keep fighting," Cooper said. "The at-bat Nick (Canas) had when he hit his home-run was huge. For him to come through like that was awesome."

Although the Millionaires responded with a two-run home-run of their own in the next inning, the Swift Current bats were not going to be silenced.

During the 5th and 6th innings, the 57's scored 11 runs on 10 hits and three walks, blowing the game wide open while taking a 16-5 lead.

Swift Current would tack on two more runs in the 8th inning to round out the scoring.

Every single 57's starting position player came around to score at least one run, and eight of the nine starters found their way in to the RBI column as well.

"I have no doubt in my mind that any player on this team in any situation can score a run or do a job." Canas said. "It's nice having that confidence in your team."

Despite not having his best outing, the 18 runs proved to be plenty of support for starting pitcher James Smith, who picked up the win, going six innings and surrendering five runs.

Although Smith may not have had his best stuff Friday night, his teammates still love having him on the mound.

"James (Smith) is a guy that will go out there and compete no matter what," Cooper said. "When they tied it up with the two-run home-run (in the 5th inning), he very easily could have rolled over but he didn't. He kept fighting and we were able to pick him up and get a win."

Trey Taylor, Sean Chandler and Cole Thibideau all pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Smith.

At the plate, Canas finished the game 2 for 4 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Cooper went 2 for 5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

For Cooper, he is now 7 for 12 over his last three games with eight RBI and five runs scored, with two home-runs.

"I'm feeling good and feeling confident," he said. "I'm swinging at good pitches and hitting them, so I want to keep doing that, for sure."

With the victory the 57's snapped their two-game losing skid and improved to 11-5 on the season.

"It was important for us to come out and get ahead early," said Head Coach Joe Carnahan. "We pitched pretty well today. James (Smith) didn't have his best stuff but he went out and competed and offensively we just kept coming at them."

Swift Current will now hit the road for a trip to Moose Jaw on Saturday before visiting Weyburn on Sunday.
