The Dean Brockman era continues in the southwest, as the new head coach and director of player personnel for the Swift Current Broncos is exactly two weeks into the job.

Officially hired on June 27, Brockman has already gone through his first CHL import draft and made his first acquisition at the helm of the Broncos' player development in his first 14 days.

He of course comes to Swift Current, having had an illustrious career as a coach and GM of the Humboldt Broncos in the SJHL, dating back to 1997.

After nearly two decades with the powerhouse Broncos, Brockman spent two years as an assistant coach with the Saskatoon Blades, before becoming the bench boss in the 'Bridge City'. He was let go by the Blades this spring after two seasons as head coach.

Brockman's prominent and exclusively Saskatchewan-based coaching career began in the Humboldt area, working his way through the minor hockey ranks.

"I got some great advice from someone: 'You need to start with younger players to see how you can communicate with them, and then work your way all up the ladder as best you can'," shared Brockman. "It's been a back-and-forth thing for me. It's a passion and I love the game - I want to succeed in the game. You take those relationships and try to build on them, and try and be successful."

His coaching career was one that was borne out of necessity, and came from a self-proclaimed fluke, after a hockey injury left his schedule a lot more free over the winter season.

"What do you do in Saskatchewan when you have no winter and no hockey? The next best thing is to coach," Brockman explained. "It started slowly, and grew into that passion for it. Just really enjoy all those young men and really trying to help them find success. Really, I think it's trying to make them better people, and trying to find their paths in their own life - you can do that through the game, and I think that's certainly a passion for me."

Swift Current Online's Shawn Mullin, the voice of the Swift Current Broncos, spoke with Brockman after week one on the job for an in-depth look at his background and rise to his second WHL head coaching gig.
