Six different goal scorers helped lead the Swift Current Broncos over the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-3.

The Broncos picked up their eighth win in their last nine games and pulled to within five points of Moose Jaw for second place in the WHL East Division with three games left to play in the regular season.

“Pretty solid game,” said Broncos associate coach Ryan Smith. “Just a little hiccup at the start of the second period. Not an easy place to play, not an easy place to win and guys responded. There's some real good things that are happening out there for us. We're closing games out, getting off to good starts and we were pretty excited about what happened in the game today.”

After Kaden Elder got hurt on a Tyler Coulter hit in the first period the Broncos mixed up their lines all throughout the night. It resulted in different combinations and a balanced attack.

“It was real good for us to be able to mix guys around,” Smith said. “That's going to happen in the playoffs. If guys aren't going, guys are getting hurt or guys are in the box you've got to rely on other guys. Mixing it up worked for us tonight and that's a good sign.”

Artyom Minulin, Lane Pederson and Tyler Steenbergen all had a goal and an assist in the win. Conner Chaulk had a career high three points and Ryley Lindgren added two assists.

The Broncos went 3 for 3 on the power play and killed off both Brandon opportunities on the man advantage.

“It was somewhat of a concern a few weeks ago or a month ago,” Smith said. “But we're trending in the right way with the PP and the PK.”

Ethan Regnier made his WHL debut in the game as the fourth line received more than their usual ice time.

“We're happy with the young guys,” Smith said. “They've got to get some action to see where they're at so that they're ready to jump in if they're needed in the playoffs.”

Swift Current struck twice on the power play in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Minulin fired a wrist shot through traffic to open the scoring and Steenbergen finished a nice passing play for his 51st of the year later in the period.

Elder was hurt on a Coulter charging major. He didn't return to the game.

Brandon quickly tied the game with two goals in 1:03 to start the second period from Tanner Kaspick and Nolan Patrick.

Pederson delivered a great saucer pass to Riley Stotts who made a terrific move to beat Logan Thompson to restore Swift Current's lead midway through the second period. Less than a minute later Pederson undressed two Wheat Kings to score his 24th of the year in spectacular fashion.

Glenn Gawdin and Arthur Miller added third period goals for Swift Current.

Taz Burman stopped 24 shots for his third straight win in his fourth straight start.

With Moose Jaw's overtime loss to Prince Albert, the door is still open for Swift Current to overcome the Warriors for home ice advantage in their first round playoff series. The Broncos will have to win all their remaining games and hope Moose Jaw loses all their.

That means a visit to Regina on Wednesday night is a must win for Swift Current if they want that spot.

“Our eyes are still on a possible second place,” Smith said. “It's an important game. Last two games against them we've played them real tough. That's our attitude against them is to continue to p lay them the right way.”

Smith didn't have any update on Elder's condition as of yet.

The Broncos wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home against Moose Jaw starting on Friday in Swift Current.

They could soon have star prospect Logan Barlage in their dressing room as his Prince Albert Mintos were eliminated from Midget AAA playoffs by Tisdale in double overtime. Barlage was the Midget AAA MVP as a 15-year-old rookie and is now eligible to play with the Broncos for the remainder of the season.

You can hear Wednesday's game in Regina on The Eagle 94.1 FM with Robertson Family Group Broncos Hockey at 6:30pm.
