Glenn Gawdin scored twice and the Swift Current Broncos got scoring from throughout their lineup in a 6-1 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Broncos wrapped up their Alberta road swing with two out of three wins.

“Real simple,” said Broncos Associate Coach Ryan Smith. “We kept the game basic. We had shorts shifts. We had a real good game plan going in and we followed it. Whenever we meander away from (the game plan) we get in trouble. We were really direct. We didn't try anything fancy. We kept the puck going north. I thought our goalie was real good early and that power play goal broke the ice.”

Gawdin led the way again for the Broncos as he was named the game's first star for the second straight game. The Calgary Flames prospect hit career highs in goals (28) and points (60) only 31 games into the WHL season.

“He's a leader,” Smith noted. “He's everything you want in a captain and he's just taken off. If you're around us enough you see all the little things too. It's not just the goals and the points. It's the winning draws, the off-ice workouts, talking to the kids and all of that stuff. He has really taken the next step.”

It was a strong game from Logan Flodell in goal making 42 saves and having his shutout spoiled by an unfortunate deflection off a Broncos' stick. Former Broncos goaltender Travis Child stopped 24 of 30 Swift Current shots.

Matteo Gennaro scored a goal and an assist, Artyom Minulin chipped in three assists and Aleksi Heponiemi had two in his return to the lineup. Heponiemi extended his point streak to 21 games.

The Broncos also got contributions from their depth in the win. Quinton Waitzner scored his first career WHL goal, Kole Gable struck for his second of the season, Ethan Regnier had two assists, while Logan Barlage and MacKenzie Wight each had helpers.

“You give them an opportunity for some looks they're not getting on a regular basis,” Smith said. “We had a simple game plan and we executed. When you do that everybody gets a chance. You don't complicate things and you go to the net. They chipped in. They made some plays and good on them. We need everybody.”

Gennaro opened the scoring re-directing in a nice feed from Heponiemi on the power play. Gable then converted a nice play by Kaden Elder and Gennaro only 24 seconds later for a quick 2-0 lead.

Swift Current broke the game open in the second period on two goals from Gawdin and a late goal from Colby Sissons. Waitzner struck on a power play rebound in the third period as the Broncos were able to rest their top two lines.

The power play kept clicking for Swift Current going 3 for 4 and the penalty kill held Edmonton to 1 for 6. The Broncos are now 21-7-2-0 on the season and sit a point over Brandon for second place in the WHL Eastern Conference.

Ben King played his second career WHL game for the Broncos, while Tyler Steenbergen missed his fourth straight game with a minor injury. Steenbergen will now leave for Canada's World Junior Championship Selection Camp.

Swift Current hosts Prince Albert on Tuesday, Kelowna on Wednesday and Kamloops on Saturday before the WHL holiday break.
