Swift Current Broncos training camp is over but the battle for roster spots continues into the pre-season.

Taz Burman is the only returning veteran in goal for Swift Current with 18-year-old Bailey Brkin and 17-year-old Joel Hofer as the most likely candidates to back him up.

Brkin says he tries not to put too much pressure on himself with only a handful of pre-season games to make an impression.

"I think you don't think of it like that," he said. "You think of it almost as just another regular season game - just trust your training and play how you play."

After earning a contract in camp last season, Brkin played 42 games for the AJHL's Calgary Mustangs last season, recording a 5.19 GAA and a .890 save percentage, and says it was very valuable experience against junior-aged players.

"From the Junior A experience and shots I feel as if the shots aren't as hard if you could say that," Brkin said. "With me coming to Swift Current (former Broncos goaltender) Jordan Papirny last year was a great mentor to me. He helped me understand the game better and helped me be a better guy around the rink too."

Now, the native of Sherwood Park, Alberta is pushing to make the jump to the WHL, but knows nothing is a sure thing.

"Nothing is ever guaranteed in the sport of hockey and everybody knows that," he said. "With the goalies that we have, it's just healthy competition between each other and we push each other to do better on and off the ice."

Brkin was the winning goalie in yesterday's intrasquad game.

Hofer went 9-5 with a 2.85 GAA and a .915 save percentage for the Pursuit of Excellence CSSHL Midget Prep team.

Swift Current also had 16-year-olds Isaac Poulter and Matt Davis in camp. 15-year-old Ethan Hein attended but is not eligible to make the roster this season.

The Broncos are in Moose Jaw tomorrow for their annual pre-season rookie game with the Warriors.
